Promotion of Inspector Shawn Devine
February 2, 2012
Inspector Devine graduated from Scollard Hall Secondary School in 1983 before continuing his education at Laurentian University where he obtained his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology in 1986. He commenced his career with our Police Service as a Constable on February 1, 1988. He was promoted to Sergeant on November 8, 2005 and on January 22, 2010 he was promoted to Staff Sergeant. Two years later, he was promoted to Inspector on January 30, 2012.

Staff Sergeant Kraft was raised in North Bay and has strong family ties to our community. He graduated from Chippewa Secondary School in 1982, before furthering his education at Cambrian College in Sudbury where he obtained a diploma in Law and Security Administration in 1984. He also studied Psychology and Criminology for one year at Carlton University in Ottawa.

Constable Blake Vietmeier

Constable Vietmeier was raised in Sudbury and Elliott Lake. He graduated from Elliott Lake Secondary School in 2007 before obtaining a Police Foundations Diploma with Academic Honours from Canadore College in 2009. While at Canadore he was the recipient of the President’s Award recognizing him for a minimum of 100 hours of Community Service.

Constable Bell was raised in North Bay. She graduated from St. Joseph Scollard Hall Secondary School in 2006. She continued her education at the University of Ottawa where she obtained her Honours Bachelor of Arts, with a Major in Psychology and Criminology in 2010.

2011 Lions Club and CTV telethon

Members of the North Bay Police Service answered the call for service and participated in the 2011 Lions Club and CTV telethon by answering the phones and taking pledges. The telethon was aired “live” coast to coast on the CTV network and was produced by Canadore College students, from the from the Capital Centre.

North Bay North Stars Hockey

Members of the North Bay Police Service/Association played hockey this past weekend against the North Bay North Stars special needs hockey teams. The North Stars, ages 10 to 70 are divided into a junior team and a senior team and they have represented our city at a number of tournaments, including an International Tournament in Boston.

Lakers Support the Domestic Violence Coordinating Committee

Chief Cook joined Mayor Al McDonald, Nipissing University President Lesley Lovett-Doust and members of the Domestic Violence Coordinating Committee (DVCC) of Nipissing for the ceremonial face-off before the Lakers hockey game on December 2, 2011 as the Lakers showed their support for the outstanding work being done by the DVCC.

North Bay Police Association Supports Big Brothers/Big Sisters

Once again this year members of the North Bay Police Association hosted a charity golf tournament at Osprey Links golf Course in Callander. Members of the organizing committee, Special Constable Boyle, Cst. Yelle and Cst. Jackson attended Moose FM with Mr. Mike Monaghan to present a $3,500.00 cheque to Ms. Darlene Jamieson the Executive Director of Big Brothers/Big Sisters in North Bay.

CHIEF’S EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR

Sergeant Mike Hunter commenced his career with the Peel Regional Police in 1987. He joined our Police Service as a Fourth Class Constable on November 19, 1990. He has worked in our Patrol Section and our Investigative Support Section. He has been a coach officer, an Employee Family Assistance Program Rep, a member of our Colour Party and a member of our Emergency Response Team since it was formed in 1994, including time as Team Leader and later Team Sergeant.

Santa Claus Parade

Once again this year our Service opened our garage doors to facilitate the building of the Big Brothers/Big Sisters float for the Santa Claus Parade. The building of the float by several volunteers was coordinated by Constable Ray Yelle and Mr. J.P. Gervais.

Annual Kidney Walk

Chief Cook and Constable Doug MacIntosh joined other members of our community to participate in the Annual Kidney Foundation Walk along the Kate Pace Way. This annual event helps make a difference in the lives of those living with kidney disease and also raises awareness specific to this medical condition.

Remembrance Day Services

Chief Cook and members of the North Bay Police Service participated in and assisted with Remembrance Day Services in both Callander and North Bay to honour those who sacrificed so much for the freedoms that we all enjoy today. Officers involved in the North Bay Service gathered at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #23 after the ceremony for a luncheon hosted by the Legion.

Remembrance Day Services in Afghanistan

Sergeant Mike Hunter and Constable Dan Robertson participated in Remembrance Day Services at the Canadian Embassy in Afghanistan. Both officers are representing our Police Service in the NATO/ISAF Afghanistan Training/Mentoring Mission. Sergeant Hunter is scheduled to return home to North Bay next week, while Constable Robertson just arrived in Kabul, Afghanistan to commence his mission on November 7th, 2011.

Canadian Police and Peace Officers Memorial

On September 25, 2011 Chief Cook and members of our Police Service attended the Canadian Police and Peace Officers Memorial Service on Parliament Hill in Ottawa. In 1978 the first Memorial honoured 14 officers. In 2011 the names of over 800 members are engraved on the Honour Roll along the perimeter wall on Parliament Hill, overlooking the Ottawa River and the Supreme Court of Canada where this photograph was taken.

On August 5, 2011 Mr. David McGuire came through North Bay as part of his “Run to Remember” national awareness campaign for brain injuries. David is running from St. John’s, Newfoundland to Victoria, British Columbia, to raise awareness for this prevalent issue. He is running the equivalent of a marathon every day.

2011 Ladies Golf Tournament for Easter Seals Kids

Deputy Chief Williams and Constable Bedard were in attendance handing out chocolates to participants in this year’s 3rd Annual Ladies Golf Tournament for Easter Seals Kids hosted at the Pinewood Golf Course. The tournament raised $9,865.00 this year for Easter Seals Kids.

Chief’s Commendation

On June 14, 2011 D/Cst. Peter Brunette was awarded a Chief’s Commendation during the Police Services Board meeting for his role as the lead investigator on Project Netherfield. This was a successful joint forces wiretap investigation conducted by the Ontario Provincial Police, Anishinabek Police Service and the North Bay Police Service.

On June 7th we held our annual Torch Run in support of the Ontario Torch Run for Special Olympics. A number of local Special Olympics athletes from Widdifield Secondary School and Community Living were joined by members of our Police Service, the OPP, Military Police, MNR and the Ministry of Correctional Services.

Freedom of the City

Freedom of the City dates back to ancient Rome and remains one of the highest honours that a City can bestow upon its military. On June 1st, 2011 as part of our Armed Forces Day celebrations Mayor Al McDonald granted 22 Wing, the Algonquin Regiment, 33 Service Battalion, the Canadian Forces Recruiting Centre, the Canadian Forces Contact Centre and Area Support Unit Northern Ontario Freedom of the City in North Bay.

Ride for Dad Kick Off

April 30, 2011 the North Bay Motorcycle Ride for Dad had its annual “kick off” at the Northgate Square Shopping Centre. Local dignitaries were on hand for a cheque presentation of last years fundraising success. The MRFD raising money in support of Prostate Cancer Research and Awareness.

Environment Committee at Work

On Saturday 30 April 2011, members of the public joined the NBPS Environment Committee in a litter clean up to honour Earth Day. Thirty-one participants targeted four key areas, including Laurier Woods, Airport Road, and Marshall Avenue in North Bay, as well as Cranberry Road in Callander.

Dancing with the Stars

Victim Services of Nipissing District recently hosted their annual, Dancing with the Stars event to raise funds in support of victims in North Bay and area. Officers assist with the Santa Fund

On 23 December 2010 members of the North Bay Police Service assisted with the delivery of baskets for the North Bay Santa Fund. Cst Henri O’Neill, Cst Aaron Northrup, D/Cst Raymond Yelle and Sgt Noel Coulas took to the streets and assisted in bringing the spirit of Christmas into local homes.

Constable Weber, Constable Jackson and Chief Cook assisted Coach Tom Hedican again this year with his Coach4food campaign in support of the North Bay Food Bank. When Coach Hedican started this program in 2005 he raised 1,000 pounds for the North Bay Food Bank.

The total number of impaired drivers arrested by members of our service between December 1, 2009 and November 30, 2010 was 77, down slightly from 84 in 2009. Constables Greg Dix, Brad Reaume and Dan Weber led the way this year with 6 arrests each.

Carman Ricciuti Santa Fund Christmas Party

Board Chair Chirico, Chief Cook, Deputy Chief Williams, Sergeant Asselin and Special Constable Degagne attended the annual Carman Ricciuti Christmas Party with countless others from North Bay and area in support of the North Bay Santa Fund. This annual party, which was hosted at Twiggs is the single-day largest fundraising event in support of the Santa Fund. This year the Board donated $500.00 and Special Constable Degagne turned over in excess of $1,500.00 raised through various fundraising activities organized by her and our staff in the Court Section.

WFSS Senior Boys Soccer

Chief Cook, Sergeant Hunter and Constable Weber have been coaching the senior boy’s soccer team at West Ferris Secondary School for several years now. This year’s team finished in second place behind Widdifield and was recently eliminated by Algonquin in an extra time loss in the NDA semi-finals.

Cops and Emergency Services for Cancer

Our bi-annual Cops and Emergency Services Fundraising Event was hosted at Northgate Square on May 19th at 1500 hours. Approximately 20 of our members including a number of officer’s children participated along with neighboring police services, the Military Police and other emergency responders, including Fire and Ambulance.

North Bay Police Service , O.P.P. Joint Force Snowmobile Unit

Once again this year we have partnered with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in the provision of a Joint Snowmobile Patrol. The mandate of this unit is to work with community partners to patrol the North Bay and area OFSC snowmobile trails, to take enforcement action where necessary, to investigation motorized snow vehicle accidents, to conduct search and rescue operations and to raise awareness regarding snowmobile safety.

Haiti Fundraiser

Staff, students and families of Marshall Park Public School recently raised $1,610.54 to assist earthquake victims in Haiti. As a result of their outstanding efforts Mr. Ian Mizzi, a teacher at the school and DARE Officer, Constable Aaron Northrup had their heads shaved at a very loud and enthusiastic school assembly on January 22nd.

North Bay Junior A Trappers and North Bay Police Service

Nicholas, age 13, is a student at Chippewa Intermediate/Secondary School and is known in the community for his unwavering desire to be a hockey goalie which was the impetus behind Northern Ontario’s only special needs hockey team, the North Bay North Stars.

On the 06 Sep 2009, Cst Sproule attended Guelph, Ontario for their annual Triathlon within the Subaru Triathlon Series. Cst Sproule has been competing in Triathlons since 1993 up until 2001. He has competed within the Former President’s Choice Triathlon Series and the now Subaru Triathlons Series.

Santa Clause Express Train Gets Police Escort

On Saturday November 21st, members of the North Bay Police Service provided an escort for the annual Santa Claus Express Train. The train is an annual Christmas tradition in North Bay. Approximately 200 children are taken by train from The Station to the North Pole, where Santa Claus is picked up and brought back to North Bay.
