North Bay Police Service

Snowmobile Trail Officer Patrol (STOP)

North Bay's geographical location is ideal for both winter and summer recreation activities. In conjunction with the Ontario Provincial Police, North Bay Detachment, Joint Forces program, we provide snowmobile patrols of local trails during the winter months.

The Service has been working with the Ontario Provincial Police for several years on a joint snowmobile patrol for the area, with one officer from each agency being assigned to the task. Since 1996, we have been a partner in the Snowmobile Trail Officer Patrol program with the Near North Trail Association and the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs. Since its inception, 4 volunteers have been sworn in as Special Constables under the Motorized Snow Vehicles Act after completing both in class and practical training. Seven other volunteers are due to be sworn in.

The volunteers work with the officers, logging thousands of kilometres and hours checking snowmobilers throughout the area to ensure a safe snowmobiling season for everyone. R.I.D.E. checks, theft prevention programs such as Project Hot Sled and overall safety for this great winter sport are all components of the program. Our appreciation to the OPP, NNTA and OFSC for their partnership and support.
