Community Programs
The Community Programs Unit has seen extensive transformation since 1993. The change of name from Crime Prevention to Community Programs is reflective of the change in strategy in dealing with issues of public safety and crime. This includes two sworn officers, who are deployed from a storefront location on Main Street. This Community Station was made possible with the support of twelve community agencies who, in partnership with the force, have identified the need for police presence. This commitment will be continued beyond the year 2000. Traditional crime prevention programs remain but are used in conjunction with Community Problem Solving techniques and community partnerships to broaden the level of contact between police and community. A change in staffing and structure to this unit is one of the highlights of the past two years. With the addition of a Sergeant in Charge of the unit and the centralization of services, a more efficient system of delivery service has resulted. The Community Programs unit includes two Community Safety Coordinators, the D.A.R.E. Officer, School Liaison, Crime Stoppers, Victim Services added to the crime prevention role once attached to this section. As well, this unit is responsible for regular media releases and the maintenance of the excellent working relationship that we enjoy with the local media. The approach to Community Problem Solving has brought neighborhoods, business, and police together to tackle issues of safety and concern to implement Community Solutions to Community Problems. This brings us one step closer to fully implementing a Community Policing Strategy that will include all areas of our community in working with Police for a safer community.
