Communications and 911
The Communications Section is comprised of full and part-time Dispatchers, who are responsible for police and fire dispatching as well as 9-1-1 call taking. All telephone and radio communications are connected to a digital recording system, with tapes stored for 90 days. The Dispatchers also have access to an instant playback unit, capable of storing approximately 2 hours of taping time. The enhanced 9-1-1 system, which was implemented in 1993, enables the Call Taker to know the address and telephone number of the caller if they are unable to provide it. This proved to be useful in October 1996, when a 3-year old had called 9-1-1 because her mother had required medical attention and her father was at work. With the address displayed, Police and Ambulance were immediately sent to the residence. The Communications Centre provides 24-hour coverage for Police Dispatch, Fire Dispatch and a 9-1-1 service for the City of North Bay. The dual dispatching role has proven effective on several occasions, such as the fire at Richardson Sports. Fire and Police resources were used in a more efficient manner, with interaction between the two dispatchers enabling tasks to be shared by both emergency services without duplication. An upgrade to the radio system, along with the addition of a repeater site in Callander has enabled our staff to more effectively perform their duties. Officer safety and service delivery effectiveness has increased with these improvements. 911 - Police - Fire - Ambulance |
