Cst. Shantz Volunteers at L.A. Dream Center

November 26, 2009

In August 2009 I had the privilege of being part of a team of 24 volunteers from Lakeshore Missionary Church that travelled to Los Angeles California, to reach out to the homeless in that city of 7 million. Approximately 80 000 homeless live on the streets of LA on any given day, and our team connected with the well-established Dream Center in order to be most effective. The Dream Center provides work projects for over 200 volunteers a day, and is the largest food bank in LA, as they process over 1 million pounds of food each month. During our eight-day missions trip we participated in many projects which included loading food trucks (then delivering this food to the needy), setting up buffets on street corners for the homeless living in parks, and giving out water and food to the folks living on Skid Row. The trip has definitely given me a new perspective on life, and allowed me to affectively reach out to those who need it most. Since we have been back, many of the team members, including myself have been exploring areas to assist those in need in our own community. A big “Thank You” goes out to those who assisted me financially to cover the cost of this trip, your donations were put to good use!
